Fu poi ripreso nel 1966 da Johnny Rivers nell'album "...And I Know You Wanna Dance" in chiave country soul.

La versione definitiva e di maggior successo fu però quella di AL WILSON del 1968 che arrivò nella top 30 americana per diventare qualche anno dopo un classico della scena Northern Soul inglese, più volte ristampata e inserita in numerose compilation del genere.

Il testo di "The Snake", si ispira alla favola di Esopo "Il contadino e la vipera" narra la storia di una donna di buon cuore che trova un serpente gravemente ferito a terra.
Il serpente morente implora la donna di aiutarlo.
La donna lo porta a casa e se ne prende cura molto bene finché non si riprende.
Tuttavia, invece di essere grato e grato il serprente morde la donna, avvelenandola.

La donna delusa chiede al rettile perché lo ha fatto nonostante gli abbia salvato la vita. Il serpente aggiunge la beffa al danno della donna. La chiama "sciocca" e continua affermando che conosceva i rischi che stava correndo quando si è offerta di aiutarla. Non può fare altro che incolpare se stessa per la sua situazione.

Il brano, il cui testo fu concepito in chiave anti razzista, fu utilizzato nella campagna elettorale di Donald Trump del 2016 identificando il serrente con gli immigrati in Usa.
Nonostante le reiterate proteste dei figli di Oscar Brown Jr. Trump ha continuato a servirsi del brano.
