The Jam - This is the modern world

“This is the modern world” non è certo il migliore.

    (thanx Paul 67)

I was responsible for all the Jam covers – singles and albums, from In the City through to Absolute Beginners. For the cover of This Is the Modern World I wanted to produce a very Post-Modern image, with some small nod to Situationism. The photographer was Gered Mankowitz, a photographer who was working with the Stones and Hendrix in the ‘60’s and many other pop stars from then through to the ‘90’s. I wanted an urban/modern setting for the band that firmly rooted them into London culture, so we found the location for the shoot under the Westway near North Kensington. The Mod influence was very much down to Paul, he had seen Pete Townshend wearing a jacket or something with arrows on, so we put the arrows using gaffer tape onto his jumper. Having used the suits for the first In the City shoot, we quickly moved into the more Mod/Carnaby Street look from then on. The shoot was done using daylight and then added flash to give heavy shadowing and emphasise the concrete monoliths of the Westway support columns and the feeling of claustrophobia from the road above. We were all pleased with the resulting images.

    My personal highlights:

-Life from a window mi fa venire ancora oggi la pelle d'oca (just dreaming up here i can see the world)
-I don't give TWO FUCKS in Modern World (sul singolo dice "the time")

(stasera, anzi domani in macchina me lo risento tutto)

    POW!

  10. INTERVISTA A WELLER su "This is the modern world"

Did you agree with the general consensus -that This Is The Modem World was a step sideways?

"Yeah. It was rubbish, half of it. There's a lot of real die-hard Jam fans who like that record. It's kind of an elitist thing, because everyone hated it when it came out. It was a bit uninspired."

Are there any tracks where you can see your songwriting developing?

"No, not really. I haven't heard it for fuckin' years. I remember 'Life From A Window' - that was a good song."

Was the cover of "In The Midnight Hour" a nod to your R&B roots?

"We were stuck for material more than anything else. That was one of the things we used to play in the live set. I was writing already, before punk, sort of Beatles derivatives, but mainly our set was R&B and rock'n'roll covers. So we'd be doing stuff like 'Midnight Hour' slowed down. Then I saw the Pistols and my life changed, although we still did that hybrid of punk rock and R&B as well as Mod."

Sounds a bit like Dr. Feelgood.

"Did you ever see 'em? Wilko [Feelgoods' mad axe man] used to jump up and do the splits, and start running backwards and forwards across the stage. Fuckin' brilliant."

    1. Ecco! : Looking from a hilltop
Watching from a lighthouse, just dreaming
Up here I can see the world
      Sometimes it don't look nice
      But that's OK

      Life from a window
I'm just taking in the view
      Life from a window
      Observing everything around you

      Staring at a grey sky
      Trying to paint it blue
      Teenage blue

      Life from a window
I'm just taking in the view
      Life from a window
      Watching everyone around you

Some people that you see around you
Tell you how devoted they are
They tell you something new on Sunday, but come Monday
      They've changed their minds

      I'm looking from a skyscraper
I'm standing on the post office tower
      So I can see
      All there is to see

      Life from a window
      I'm taking in the view
      Life from a window
      Watching everything around you

      I'm looking from a skyscraper
I'm standing on the post office tower
      So I can see
      All there is to see

    buona domenica a tutte/i
