Van Morrison - Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)

"Jackie Wilson Said (I'm in Heaven When You Smile)" è un omaggio sincero e devoto a uno dei suoi ispiratori, il soul man Jackie Wilson, da parte di VAN MORRISON, dall'album del luglio 1972 "Saint Dominic's Preview", poi ripresa dai Dexy's Midnight Runners in Too Rye Ay" nel 1982 (in modo non troppo lontano dall'originale).

Il primo demo è del gennaio 1972. Quando a fine mese la band entrò in studio registrò la canzone in diretta alla prima take.
Il chitarrista Doug Messenger ricordò: "Alla fine rimanemmo tutti in silenzio: ce l'avevamo fatta in una sola volta? Van ne volle fare un'altra, ma si fermò dopo qualche battuta perché sentiva che non funzionava. 'Penso che ce l'abbiamo già".
Le sovraincisioni di fiati furono aggiunte in seguito.
Lo stesso Van Morrison ammise che anche il cantato era ispirato da quello, molto distintivo di Jackie Wilson (che a sua volta fu palesemente imitato da Kevin Rowland in gran parte della carriera con i Dexy's Midnight Runners.

Il brano è diventato una costante nel repertorio live di Van Morrison.

La versione dei Dexy's Midnight Runners fu pubblicata come singolo nell'agosto 1982 e arrivò al quinto posto delle classifiche inglesi (dopo il successo di "Come On Eileen", scelta all'ultimo momento come primo 45 giri al posto della cover di Van Morrison).
Van avrebbe dovuto partecipare al brano ma alla fine si limitò a un parlato finale che venne però tagliato nel mixaggio.
