Alla fine del 1977 Joe Strummer e Mick Jones (con grande scorno di Paul Simonon, il vero appassionato e conoscitore di musica reggae della band) furono mandati in Giamaica per due settimane per trovare l'ispirazione e scrivere canzoni per il prossimo secondo album dei Clash, "Give 'Em Enough Rope".
L'esperienza non fu così positiva e incoraggiante.
Tanto che al ritorno Joe scrisse il testo di "Safe European Home" sulla "triste esperienza".

Totalmente naif.
Conoscevano Lee Scratch Perry ma non eravamo riusciti a trovarlo così eravamo per conto nostro. Mentre camminavamo per i docks alla ricerca di qualche droga ci chiamavano tutti "maiali bianchi".
L'unico motivo perché non ci abbiano uccisi è perchè pensavano che fossimo due marinai usciti da una nave del porto. O forse perché pensavano che fossimo due pazzi o qualcosa del genere"

Una particolarità poco conosciuta è che il disco fu registrato a San Francisco durante un periodo in cui in classifica c'era "I've Done Everything for You" di Sammy Hagar, futura voce dei Van Halen, il cui riff iniziale è abbastanza simile al brano dei Clash e si suppone quindi un'influenza diretta (probabilmente inconsapevole) a livello compositivo.

Sammy Hagar, interpellato, è stato abbastanza esplicito in tal senso :
"Non c'è da stupirsi, quando sono salito su un ascensore con Joe Strummer nell'82 non mi ha guardato ah, ah ah!
Grande band e canzone, non gli avrei mai fatto causa!"
