Respond Records

Ricco e famoso, il Paul Weller dei primi anni 80, non si rilassa negli agi e nel lusso ma prosegue a creare, a dare opportunità a chi ha avuto meno fortuna di lui.
Oltre alla sfortunata casa editrice Riot Stories (che riuscì però a pubblicare uno stupendo libro sulla storia degli Small Faces “All our yesterdays” di Terry Rawlings e alcune altre cose interessanti) fonda nel 1981 la RESPOND RECORDS, etichetta discografica nata con l’intento di essere una “nuova Tamla Motown” con giovani artisti vicini ad una soul music moderna e attuale.

Purtroppo l’attualità sonora dei primi anni Ottanta era spesso caratterizzata da suoni sintetici, batterie elettroniche e plastic pop di varia natura.
E la Respond si indirizzò spesso verso queste sonorità nel tentativo di proporre un “nuovo soul”.
Deludendo non poco lo stuolo di mod adoranti che dalla label di Weller si aspettava dei cloni dei Jam o degli Small Faces o epigoni del classico suono soul/rhythm and blues.

L’esordio fu incoraggiante e sorprendente con lo strano beat/new wave di sapore 60’s del singolo “Been teen” delle DOLLY MIXTURE ma ben presto si perse nei meandri sonori di cui sopra, nonostante nomi come QUESTIONS, TRACIE (che collaborò spesso con gli Style Council, cantò nel loro singolo d’esordio “Speak like a child” e che fu il nome principale dell’etichetta) e A CRAZE abbiano avuto momenti interessanti.

Weller (e gli Style Council Mick Talbot e Steve White) sono spesso presenti sia come strumentisti che compositori nei vari dischi (oltre a Elvis Costello che scrive per Tracie “I love you when you sleep") ma lo spessore generale delle proposte rimase comunque modesto (nonostante qualche buon risultato di vendita).
La Respond cessa le pubblicazioni nel 1985, alla fine degli anni Novanta la giapponese Trattoria Records ha ristampato quasi tutto (con aggiunta di bonus) in CD.
